The scene unfolded at a petrol station in Stratford-upon-Avon as a man, covered in petrol and clutching a lighter, made a desperate plea to the mayor.
Witnesses described the harrowing incident, in which a police officer intervened to prevent a potential tragedy. The officer, identified as Sgt Thompson, was seen pleading with the man to come and talk to the officers, urging him to put down the lighter and move away from the fuel.
The man, however, refused to cooperate, instead pouring more petrol over his head. Sgt Thompson, displaying quick thinking and bravery, dashed towards the man and tackled him to the ground, risking his own life to prevent a fire.
Other officers and firefighters responded swiftly, piling on top of the man and hosing him down with foam to prevent the risk of a fire. The dramatic scene was met with praise from Acting Chief Constable David Gardner, who described Sgt Thompson's actions as "incredible fortitude, empathy, and quick-thinking".
Sgt Thompson has been nominated for a bravery award at the Police Federation National Police Bravery Awards 2026, a testament to his selfless actions that day. The officer credited his team for their support, saying "we co-ordinated, we worked together, and it was together that we stopped what could have been a terrible loss of life".
The incident serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication required to serve in law enforcement. Sgt Thompson's actions demonstrate the importance of quick thinking and decisive action in emergency situations, and his nomination for a bravery award is a well-deserved recognition of his heroism.
