A 28-year-old man from Toronto now faces a murder charge following a fatal shooting in Scarborough that left another individual dead and the accused critically injured. The incidents occurred on Monday in two separate locations within the Victoria Park area, prompting an extensive police response.
Emergency services were first called to a scene near Terraview Blvd. just after 3:15 p.m., where a man was discovered with gunshot wounds. Levon Byers, 32, was pronounced dead at the site. Approximately 1 kilometer north, in the Victoria Park-Sheppard Ave. E. area, authorities found a second man with severe injuries near a TD Bank branch. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later stabilized.
Police confirmed the two incidents are connected but provided limited additional details. Officials emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public and no other suspects are being pursued. A firearm recovered from the vehicle of the injured suspect, identified as Hakim El Mozazi, is under investigation. El Mozazi, 28, had previously faced charges related to illegal firearm possession and unlicensed firearm use.
On Tuesday, authorities upgraded charges against El Mozazi to second-degree murder. The case marks the 17th homicide in Toronto this year. Investigators urge anyone with relevant information to contact local law enforcement directly or through anonymous tip lines.
