Manchester United's recent transfer moves have left supporters underwhelmed, according to club legend Paul Scholes. The 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos is expected to join the Red Devils on a four-year contract, with an option to extend his stay for an additional year.
Santos is set to replace the departed Casemiro, and United has reportedly agreed a £50m deal with Chelsea to secure his signing. The 22-year-old has already agreed personal terms and has been granted permission to undergo a medical in the north-west.
Scholes expressed his doubts about the signing, stating that he doesn't think it will "excite" supporters. He questioned Chelsea's decision to sell Santos and wondered who else United could bring in to strengthen their squad.
Scholes also name-checked Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton as a potential signing for United, suggesting that he could be a possibility at the right price. He emphasized that the club needs to do something to strengthen their squad, particularly with the Champions League next season and three games a week.
The former United and England midfielder also discussed the potential return of Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona following an ugly falling out with Ruben Amorim. Scholes has his doubts about Rashford's chances of turning his Old Trafford career around, suggesting that it's only Michael Carrick who can make it happen.
Scholes criticized Rashford for becoming "really lazy" out of possession and neglecting his defensive responsibilities. He attributed this to Rashford's influence from watching Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who he believes made him think he was invincible.
The Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, who was responsible for Rashford's departure, has since been appointed as AC Milan's new manager. Scholes expressed his doubts about Amorim's ability to succeed at Milan, suggesting that he will struggle to replicate his success at United.
Scholes' comments come as a hot topic of conversation amongst United supporters this summer, with many eager to see the club strengthen their squad and make a success of the new season.
