Herzog emphasized that New York, a city dear to the hearts of Israelis and himself, should not tolerate such rhetoric. He also expressed hope that the city will continue to thrive despite Mamdani's comments. The Israeli president also touched on the topic of Iran, describing the regime as a significant threat to global stability, not only in the Middle East but worldwide.
Herzog pointed out that Iran's ideology does not accommodate other religions or moderate Islam, making it a danger to global security. He also mentioned that many Americans have been killed by the Islamic Republic, highlighting the regime's threat to U.S. national security interests. The Israeli president noted that the United States and Israel have launched joint military campaigns against Iran, including Operation Roaring Lion, and emphasized the need for continued cooperation to address this threat.
Herzog also discussed the relationship between the United States and Israel, describing it as strong and based on shared values. He praised former President Donald Trump's support for Israel, citing his decision to relocate the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and his recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Herzog expressed his gratitude for Trump's efforts to secure the return of 255 hostages held by Hamas following the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre.
The Israeli president acknowledged that there are challenges to the relationship, including campaigns of disinformation on social media that aim to smear Israel. He encouraged young Americans to visit Israel and experience its innovative spirit, which has contributed significantly to fields such as health, energy, science, agriculture, and food security.
Herzog highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue, particularly with Christian communities in the Holy Land. He emphasized that Israel values and supports these communities, which have grown in recent years. The president also expressed his commitment to strengthening ties with Evangelical communities in the United States and elsewhere.
Herzog weighed in on the controversy surrounding the dismissal of the International Criminal Court's Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, who issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu before being removed over sexual misconduct allegations. Herzog accused Khan of trying to distract attention from the allegations by issuing the warrants.
The Israeli president also praised the efforts of the U.S. administration to advance the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire, including a roadmap that includes disarmament. He emphasized that Hamas cannot control Gaza and turn it into a launching pad for terror and hate anymore.
