Michigan Democrat Endorses Heir Apparent for Senate Seat

Michigan Democrat Endorses Heir Apparent for Senate Seat

The Michigan Democratic Senate primary has taken a decisive turn as Sen. Gary Peters has endorsed U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, marking a significant shift in the high-stakes contest.

Peters, who is set to retire after two terms in the Senate, announced his endorsement on Monday, citing Stevens' readiness to "fight for Michigan" from day one. This move reverses his earlier stance, when he expressed a desire to remain neutral in the August 4 primary.

The Democratic Party is eager to maintain control of the Michigan seat, and many party leaders have rallied behind Stevens, a four-term congresswoman with a focus on manufacturing, jobs, and the state's auto industry.

Stevens' campaign contrasts with that of her progressive rival, Abdul El-Sayed, a former Michigan health director running on a platform that includes "Medicare-for-all" and campaign finance reform. El-Sayed's emphasis on the war in Gaza has highlighted a growing divide within the Democratic Party.

Peters' endorsement follows a similar move by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Ruben Gallego, and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, all of whom have backed Stevens. El-Sayed, on the other hand, has been endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Chris Van Hollen.

The campaign has become increasingly personal, with both candidates accusing each other of running negative campaigns. Stevens has accused El-Sayed of refusing to release his personal financial records, while El-Sayed has criticized Stevens over millions of dollars in outside spending supporting her campaign.

The Democratic nominee will likely face Republican Mike Rogers, a former Michigan congressman running unopposed for the party's nomination. The contest is expected to be one of the nation's most expensive and closely watched Senate contests in November.
