Heather Herbert, a staff member at the University of Aberdeen, posted comments on social media expressing satisfaction at the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe before a murder investigation was opened.
In a response to a student newspaper, Herbert said she was “glad she is dead” and claimed she had no power to influence events, adding that Widdecombe had made “the lives of ordinary people hell.” The posts remain online.
The university’s principal and vice-chancellor announced an internal investigation, emphasizing that the institution does not tolerate violence or hateful behaviour.
University officials released a statement clarifying that Herbert’s remarks are her own and do not represent the views of the university, and that any complaints will be handled confidentially through established procedures.
Rector Iona Fyfe noted receiving a large volume of emails about the incident but stated she holds no responsibility for individual staff conduct.
Police are investigating Widdecombe’s death, which occurred at her remote Dartmoor home after she failed to respond to messages and missed a scheduled interview. A 28‑year‑old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and authorities say they are not seeking additional suspects.
