A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murdering former politician Ann Widdecombe after police linked him to the fatal attack on her Dartmoor home.
Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police, supported by Counter‑Terrorism units, detained the suspect shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. He was identified as a white British male and taken into custody without incident.
Investigators say the suspect had become reclusive following his father’s death last year, rarely leaving his house and allowing his vehicle to sit unused for months. Neighbours described him as calm and unremarkable when police arrived, noting that armed officers knocked loudly on his door, he opened it, confirmed his identity and was escorted away.
Police have stated there is no evidence the crime was terrorism‑related or politically motivated, and they are not seeking any additional suspects. The force emphasized that the public remains safe and that the investigation is ongoing.
Detectives remain open‑minded about motive, but have not provided further details pending the outcome of forensic analysis and questioning.
