Argentina's Lionel Messi failed to score for the first time in this World Cup, but the team still managed to advance to the semifinals after defeating ten-man Switzerland in a thrilling match that went into extra time.
Switzerland had taken the game to penalties, but goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez sent the defending champions through to the next round.
England, who will face Argentina in the semifinals, have been warned about the threat of Messi, but former England star Joe Cole believes the team can "put Messi to bed" and reach the World Cup final.
Cole said, "We will have to put Lionel Messi to bed. We're going to put him to bed. 100 per cent." Micah Richards disagreed with Cole's statement, but Cole remained confident in England's chances.
"I'm saying it now, England are going to the World Cup final, we've got too much pace for Argentina and we're going to beat them, I feel it in my bones," Cole said.
However, Ally McCoist views England as only the "third-best team left in the tournament," which has sparked debate about England's chances of winning the World Cup.
McCoist said, "At this moment in time, England are the third-best team left in the tournament." Despite the differing opinions, England is set to face Argentina in a highly anticipated semifinal match.
The other semifinal match will feature European champions Spain against 2022 World Cup finalists France, who have been considered the standout team of the tournament so far.
