Hanlon's closest friend, Jennifer Payne, has come forward to shed light on the victim's young adult life in Boston, a time that is now overshadowed by the tragic events of her death.
Payne, a graduate school friend and former roommate of Hanlon's, described the pain and confusion of losing a loved one to murder, saying, "Nothing prepares you for unexpectedly losing a loved one, let alone to murder. But this case has been so unusual even for a murder."
Payne, who has been in a "constant state of 'functional freeze,'" is struggling to come to terms with Hanlon's death, which has left a void in her life and the lives of those who knew her.
As the investigation continues, Payne's primary concern is honoring Hanlon's memory and ensuring her young daughter knows how loved her mother was, saying, "I want them, especially Brooke's daughter, to remember her beautiful and full life, that I was so grateful to be part of, and not just the ending to it."
