Tornado Warning Lifted in Parts of Niagara Region Following Storms

The Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for parts of Niagara Region on Sunday as a severe thunderstorm moved through the area, but that warning has since ended.

The advisory was issued just before 12:30 p.m. for St. Catharines-Grimsby-Northern Niagara Region as Environment Canada tracked a severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado and bring damaging winds, large hail, and locally intense rainfall.

The national weather agency urged people to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or a sturdy shelter when threatening weather approaches, warning that this is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.

Those without access to shelter were advised to lie in a low spot and protect their head from flying debris, with anyone out on the water instructed to return to shore and seek shelter if possible, or to move directly away from the path of the tornado.

Emergency Management Ontario also recommended that people take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

A yellow warning for rainfall was issued at 3:47 a.m. on Sunday for Niagara Falls-Welland-Southern Niagara Region and St. Catharines-Grimsby-Northern Niagara Region, with localized heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm expected in those areas.

The rain was expected to diminish from west to east later that afternoon, although other areas across the province were also hit with yellow rainfall warnings, including Ottawa, Hamilton, and Windsor.
