The devastating wildfires in the Spokane area have left hundreds of structures destroyed and thousands of people forced to evacuate, with a former mayoral candidate urging Americans to prepare for similar disasters.
Despite the destruction, there have been no reported fatalities, but many pets have perished, leaving families heartbroken. Neighbors are being urged to support one another through the lengthy recovery process, with many expecting the area to be affected for weeks to come.
Firefighters are battling three major blazes in the area, with the Autumn Lane Fire having burned 3,333 acres, the Old Trail Fire having scorched 3,481 acres, and the Fairview Fire having grown to 914 acres. All three fires remain 0% contained.
More than 900 firefighters and support personnel have been deployed across the three fires, with the Autumn Lane Fire remaining the primary focus. Authorities have evacuated over 5,000 homes, with approximately 600 structures destroyed, although officials warn the number could rise as crews gain access to damaged areas.
The American Red Cross has launched a massive relief effort and is seeking donations and volunteers to assist displaced residents. Emergency officials have also warned people to stay away from lakes, rivers, and other waterways where firefighting aircraft are collecting water to battle the blazes.
Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has spoken with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, detailing the devastation unfolding in Spokane and across the state. Trump expressed his concern for the people of Washington during this difficult time, and the two will work together on additional requests for federal assistance.
Sen. Patty Murray has also spoken with Mullin, saying the federal government is closely tracking the disaster and will do everything it can to support response and recovery. Murray called the destruction "heartbreaking" and said it will be a long road to recovery.
The Spokane County Board of Commissioners has unanimously declared a state of emergency, giving county officials additional authority to quickly purchase emergency equipment and supplies. Emergency officials are urging people to stay safe and follow local officials' instructions as the response continues.
