A 10‑year‑old boy from Dallas was swept into a powerful surf break at a Santa Cruz beach last month, losing consciousness and stopping breathing before a teenage lifeguard pulled him to safety.
The boy, Nathaniel Rai, was playing in shallow water when a large wave knocked him down. He recalled screaming for help before passing out, and lifeguard Ryder Williams, age 16, entered the turbulent water and secured the unconscious child.
Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, said that an additional two seconds in the surf could have carried his son another 15 to 20 feet out, beyond visual range and rescue capability, creating a near‑death scenario.
Williams maintained a firm grip on the limp child, navigating the strong currents while carrying roughly 100 pounds of dead weight, a feat the father described as exceptionally demanding.
After being brought ashore, Nathaniel regained consciousness and began coughing up sand. Emergency responders warned the family of “secondary drowning,” a condition that can develop hours after a near‑drowning event.
The family expressed deep gratitude for the lifeguard’s quick action and voiced strong support for any formal recognition of his bravery.
Since the rescue, the Rai and Williams families have cultivated a close bond, maintaining daily contact and describing each other as an extended family.
Both families share an interest in mixed‑martial arts and have discussed attending a UFC event together, reflecting their growing personal connection.
Williams’ father, Shane, is a retired firefighter, and his son hopes to follow a similar public‑service path. Sumit Rai runs a charity that screens firefighters for occupational cancer risks, and his son has participated in related activities for several years.
