A series of apartment building fires in Toronto on Tuesday resulted in two deaths and injuries to four individuals, including two children.
The first blaze erupted at an apartment complex on Ontario Street and St. James Avenue around 3:10 a.m. Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the flames, but the incident left two adults and two children hospitalized with moderate injuries.
Investigators noted the presence of an e‑bike in the unit where the fire began. The cause remains under investigation, and no definitive link to the battery has been established.
At approximately 7:45 a.m., a second fire broke out in a building on Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue in Scarborough. Fire crews reached the scene in less than three minutes and controlled the spread of the fire.
A single fatality was discovered outside the building, likely an occupant attempting to escape. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and authorities are working with police to identify witnesses.
Less than three hours later, a third fire occurred at an apartment building on Wellesley Street East and Sherbourne Street in downtown Toronto. The incident, reported around 10:30 a.m., resulted in a second death on the scene.
Investigations into all three incidents are ongoing, with fire and police departments continuing to assess the causes and circumstances surrounding the tragedies.
