The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that a 30-year-old officer was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday while responding to a report of an armed person.
The incident occurred at a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue, where a person was waving a firearm and appeared to be intoxicated, police said.
Officers and police drones were dispatched to the scene shortly before 4 p.m., and the suspect was located near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass.
The suspect then opened fire on the officers, prompting one of them to return fire, resulting in the suspect's death.
The wounded officer, a 30-year-old who was also a Marine veteran, was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Clark County Sheriff's Department described the officer's actions as "heroic," saying he was worked on by the Clark County Fire Department, other officers, and EMS before being transported to the hospital.
The sheriff expressed his condolences to the officer's family and pledged to support them in the days ahead, adding that the officer was a dedicated public servant who had served the community for over three years.
The officer's death has been met with an outpouring of support from other law enforcement agencies, with the Nevada State Police extending their condolences to the officer's family and loved ones.
