Young Adults Favor AI Assistance for Difficult Breakup Messages

The increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) to navigate intimate relationships has raised concerns among experts. While AI may be able to provide helpful tools for communication, it cannot replace human emotions and interaction.

A recent survey of over 1,000 American adults who actively use AI in their romantic lives revealed that 41% have used AI to initiate a breakup text, and 57% would trust AI over seeking advice from friends. The results suggest that AI is now handling some of people's most intimate experiences.

The survey also found that a majority of those surveyed used AI to help with their romantic woes, with 56% considering AI a helpful dating tool. However, a concerning issue is that AI is not only being used as a second opinion but also as a replacement for human emotions and interaction.

"AI can be useful if someone is trying to slow down and think before they speak," said a licensed professional counsellor-supervisor. "However, when a person uses it to outsource the feeling, the responsibility, or the discomfort of a relationship conversation, that is where it can become a problem."

The expert emphasized that relationships are not just about finding the right words but also about being present, taking responsibility, and being willing to be real. AI may offer a clean answer, but it doesn't know the emotions of two people, especially when it comes to breakups and apologies.

The use of AI in relationships also raises concerns about trust. If one finds out that an apology or breakup text was written by AI, they may feel manipulated. The expert suggests that people should use AI to clarify their thoughts and not replace their voice in communication.

Ultimately, relationships are strengthened when people are willing to be real, take responsibility, and stay present for the response. While AI can be a helpful tool, it should not replace the human part of communication.
