The UK government has introduced new rules to limit political donations from individuals who have recently moved to the country from abroad.
The move is aimed at preventing individuals from bypassing existing limits on donations by registering to vote in the UK shortly before making a large contribution to a political party.
Under the new rules, anyone who moves to the UK from overseas will face a cap of £100,000 on donations for at least a year. This will apply to both individuals and companies.
The changes are part of a broader package of measures announced by the government to address foreign financial interference in UK politics.
Communities Secretary Steve Reed described the new rules as "world-leading action" that will "protect the integrity of our elections and tackle the threats we face from abroad."
The measures also include a requirement for candidates to prove that any money they received to fund a campaign before it officially began came from a legitimate source.
The new rules come as a result of an independent review into foreign financial interference in UK politics led by civil servant Philip Rycroft.
The review recommended a number of measures to strengthen the rules on political donations, including a ban on donations made in cryptocurrency.
Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, has faced questions over a £9 million donation from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, who has been based in Thailand for over five years.
Farage has said he would "gladly" accept more cash from Harborne if it was offered, but the new rules may limit the party's ability to do so.
The Representation of the People Bill, which includes the new measures, is set to return to the House of Commons next week.
The government's move is aimed at strengthening the rules on political donations and preventing individuals from dodging the rules by registering to vote in the UK shortly before making a large contribution.
The new rules will apply to both individuals and companies, and will be included in the Representation of the People Bill.
The government's decision to introduce new rules on political donations is seen as a major step in strengthening the integrity of UK elections and preventing foreign financial interference.
The new measures are part of a broader effort to strengthen the rules on political donations and prevent individuals from dodging the rules by registering to vote in the UK shortly before making a large contribution.
