California lifeguard Ryder Williams has been hailed as a hero after saving the life of a 10-year-old boy who was swept into the ocean at Seabright State Beach on Saturday. Williams, 16, was stationed at Tower 2 when he spotted the child, Nathaniel, losing his footing in the rough surf.
According to eyewitness accounts, Nathaniel was standing on the wet sand near the shoreline when a wave knocked him down and pulled him roughly 15 yards into deep water. Williams quickly radioed in the situation, left his devices behind, and ran towards the shore with fins strapped to his wrists and a buoy.
He then dove into the water and swam to reach Nathaniel, who was struggling in the rough surf. Williams held Nathaniel in the water for several moments before fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen entered the water to assist. The two lifeguards then brought Nathaniel to shore and evaluated him for injuries.
Ryder Williams' bravery has sparked national attention, with President Donald Trump offering to take him to the White House and award him a national honor. Nathaniel's father, Sumit Rai, expressed his gratitude and support for recognition of the young lifeguard's heroism.
Rai said that carrying his limp son through the crashing waves required Williams to move roughly 100 pounds, a feat he described as "remarkable." He noted that he could never repay Williams for his actions, but was grateful for his courage and heroism.
California State Parks' lifeguards performed 34 rescues over the weekend and made more than 5,000 preventative contacts along the coastline. Williams reflected on the value of local lifeguards in the community, saying he feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely.
"This is my job and I love what I do," Williams said. "I'm thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day."
