Vandalism Reported at East York Church, Rock-Throwing Incident

Toronto Police have made an arrest in a series of incidents involving a 56-year-old man accused of throwing rocks through the windows of an East York church on three separate occasions.

The first incident allegedly occurred on July 24 at the church near Pape and Cosburn Aves, with a man throwing a rock through a window and causing damage to the religious property.

One week later, on Friday, the man is said to have returned to the same church and thrown another rock through a window, causing further damage.

A Toronto Police vehicle is seen on Aug. 6, 2024.

Just a day later, on Saturday, police officers in the vicinity allegedly spotted the same man throwing yet another rock through a window of the same church.

A suspect was arrested at the scene and has been charged with three counts of mischief relating to religious property.

The accused, identified as Khaliq Hussain Anwar of Toronto, is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing.

Police have stated that suspected hate-motivated offences are led by the Hate Crime Unit, and if alleged, the investigation is treated as a priority.

When determining the appropriate charge and sentence, the officer-in-charge may consult with the Crown and take into consideration the hate-motivated aspect of the offence.

Police are urging anyone with information regarding this investigation to come forward and report it to the authorities.

A hotline number has been established for individuals to anonymously report any information they may have, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

A full investigation is underway, and the public is being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
