On Saturday night, a targeted shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair street festival left two men dead. Police identified the victims as Cesar Vinces, 20, and Shaquan Quashie, 25. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of large public gatherings in the city.
Mayor Olivia Chow said the city would not allow criminal activity to halt Toronto’s tradition of outdoor street festivals. She pledged to collaborate with city staff and the police chief to ensure future events remain safe.
Police Chief Myron Demkiw echoed the mayor’s commitment, describing street festivals as a vital part of the city’s culture. He affirmed that police resources would continue to support these events, although no new security measures were announced at the time.
Demkiw emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue among police, city officials, and festival organizers. He referenced prior discussions with the city manager to strengthen collaboration and strategic planning for event management.
Drawing on experience from hosting FIFA World Cup matches, the chief highlighted lessons learned about coordinating large crowds. He suggested that future security could include controlled access points and screening, pending further discussion.
Chow reiterated that the city would work closely with police and festival organizers to protect attendees. She stressed that street festivals remain a cherished summertime tradition that must continue safely.
