An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot a father of three during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, early on Saturday morning.
The victim was identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national who was transported to a hospital after the shooting and later died from his injuries.
Authorities say Salgado Araujo allegedly tried to evade arrest by ramming an ICE vehicle and attempting to drive over a federal officer, prompting the agent to fire in what was described as self‑defense.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that the stop was part of a targeted enforcement operation aimed at apprehending an illegal alien and that Salgado Araujo refused to comply with verbal commands before the confrontation.
Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo, said his father had lived in the United States for more than thirty years and worked in construction to support his family, adding that his father did not deserve the outcome of the encounter.
Separate investigations have been opened by Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to examine the shooting and the alleged assault on the federal officer.
The incident follows a broader pattern of ICE involvement in fatal shootings, which has drawn criticism and prompted calls for greater oversight of the agency’s enforcement tactics.
Houston, Texas’s largest city, is home to a diverse population of roughly six and a half million residents, with a mix of racial and ethnic backgrounds.
