Matford Brook Academy in Exeter is set for demolition after safety concerns were raised.
Construction firm Kier concluded that the existing structure could not be safely repaired and would need to be dismantled and rebuilt.
The Department for Education notified the school that the building would be razed and replaced with a new, fully compliant facility. The letter emphasized the commitment to a high‑quality environment for pupils, staff, and the community.
Since the original building was deemed unsafe in 2023, students have been attending classes in temporary structures.
Headteacher Emily Simpson‑Horne thanked parents for their patience and highlighted that a school's value lies in its people rather than its buildings.
Councillor Alan Connett, a Liberal Democrat, expressed relief that a solution was found but raised concerns about the original contract's tendering process.
Work is underway to plan the rebuild, including selecting a contractor with a strong track record, and the Department for Education will continue to collaborate with the trust to minimize disruption.
