The investigation into the murder of a 43-year-old American citizen living in Ireland has taken a disturbing turn. Jamey Carney was found deceased in her rented home in Killarney on Tuesday at around 1:20 pm local time by a family member.
The murder was particularly gruesome, with Carney suffering serious head injuries in a brutal attack. Her 13-year-old daughter lived with her at the residence. Carney had moved to Ireland from New York just five years ago.
The suspect allegedly responsible for murdering Carney is 28-year-old Ahmad Alsaqer. He moved from France to Ireland in 2024 to seek asylum and is suspected of bludgeoning Carney to death before boarding a bus from Killarney to Dublin early Tuesday morning.
Alsaqer then booked a last-minute flight to Istanbul, Turkey. He and Carney were dating each other at the time of the crime, having met at an anti-Israel rally in Ireland about a year and a half ago. They had a public online presence, with Carney posting videos of their relationship on social media.
Carney was known locally as a community member involved in pro-Palestine activities and had posted several videos showcasing her relationship with Alsaqer. These included clips of them traveling together and Carney attempting to learn Arabic words.
The Gardaí are trying to locate Alsaqer and have appealed to the public for information. The investigation is ongoing, and details from the relationship between Carney and Alsaqer are raising questions about their dynamic.
The exact circumstances surrounding the murder and the motivations behind it are still unclear. The Gardaí are working to piece together the events leading up to the crime and bring Alsaqer to justice.
