Illinois State Police arrested a repeat felony offender after he allegedly entered the backyard of the Chicago residence of Governor JB Pritzker on the night of July 4.
Dwayne Milton, 46, has accumulated more than ten felony convictions and has been involved in over sixty criminal cases in Cook County.
At the time of the incident, Milton was on pretrial release for a felony retail‑theft charge and was wearing an ankle monitor. He disappeared from electronic monitoring for eleven days, violating curfew and other conditions shortly after the device was installed in mid‑June.
State troopers assigned to the governor’s security detail observed Milton climbing over a fence and entering the property’s backyard around 10 p.m. They detained him before local police arrived.
Milton was charged with criminal trespass and initially released pending trial with a directive not to return to the governor’s property.
He was subsequently taken into custody after pleading guilty to the pending felony retail‑theft case, receiving a one‑year prison sentence with credit for time already served.
His criminal history includes a 2024 burglary conviction, multiple retail thefts, and two robberies dating back to 2005, reflecting extensive interaction with the Cook County court system.
The case highlights ongoing debates in Illinois over criminal‑justice policies that have altered pretrial release and monitoring practices.
