Spain advanced to the World Cup final after defeating France in the semifinal, with Pedro Porro’s second-half goal proving decisive against the three-time finalists.
They will face Argentina, who came from behind to beat England in the other semifinal. Anthony Gordon had given England a second-half lead before Enzo Fernandez equalized and Lautaro Martinez scored a stoppage-time winner.
Former Chelsea and England defender John Terry, present at both semifinals, identified Spain as favorites to win the tournament. He praised Argentina’s resilience against England but pointed to Spain’s defensive strength and balance in possession.
Terry noted that Spain conceded little throughout the tournament and looked especially strong on the left flank. He acknowledged Argentina’s threat with Lionel Messi but concluded Spain would likely have too much quality.
Scottish football figure Graeme Souness also favored Spain, while warning against underestimating Argentina’s mental toughness. He described the final as difficult to predict and highlighted Argentina’s disruptive approach early in matches.
Argentina are pursuing a fourth World Cup title and would become only the third nation to retain the trophy. Spain last won in 2010 and are seeking a second crown.
England and France, the defeated semifinalists, will meet in the third-place playoff. The final takes place at MetLife Stadium.
