She seemed to suggest that meth use is a necessary coping mechanism for people living on the streets, stating, "You sleep out on the street for a couple of weeks and tell me that you're not using something to stay sane or using meth to so that you don't go to sleep to protect yourself."
However, when pressed for clarification on her comments, Bass appeared to backtrack, insisting that she never said meth use was a form of protection. Instead, she claimed that she was referring to people using meth to stay awake at night due to concerns about being assaulted.
Bass's comments have been widely criticized, with many arguing that she is prioritizing excuses for the causes of homelessness over addressing the issue itself. Her suggestion that taxpayers should fund dental care for homeless individuals who have lost their teeth due to methamphetamine use has also been met with skepticism.
Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt has weighed in on the controversy, slamming Bass for her perceived incompetence and lack of understanding on the issue of homelessness. "Homelessness doesn't cause drug addiction. Drug addiction causes homelessness," he stated.
Pratt's comments echo the sentiments of many who believe that Bass's approach to addressing homelessness is misguided. By downplaying the role of substance abuse in exacerbating the crisis, she may be failing to address the root causes of the problem.
