Piccadilly Circus descended into chaos last night as England fans reacted to the national team’s World Cup semi-final defeat.
A lone Argentina supporter was escorted through central London by Metropolitan Police officers after crowds of England fans gathered following the loss.
Tensions flared after the Three Lions were eliminated by Argentina in a 2-1 result, ending their 2026 tournament run.
The man, wearing an Argentina shirt, was flanked by officers as they moved him away from screaming fans wrapped in England flags.
Witnesses reported jeering, swearing, and at least one object thrown as police formed a barrier between the supporter and the crowd.
The Argentina fan appeared stunned by the hostility and raised his hands upon reaching a police van, where he was driven from the scene. There is no suggestion he committed any offense.
Footage from the area showed officers and security personnel separating agitated spectators, many of whom were recording on their phones.
At Wembley’s Boxpark, England supporters were left visibly distressed by the outcome.
Twin brothers aged 33 said they believed the team had a strong chance to win, with one calling the performance too defensive after taking an early lead.
The other said he had hoped the trophy would finally return to England, referencing the popular mantra “it’s coming home.”
Argentina, the defending champions, will face Spain in Sunday’s final.
Argentina’s manager said after the match that his players sensed England were doubting themselves on the pitch.
