Hundreds Block Florida Interstate in Alleged Street Takeover

Hundreds Block Florida Interstate in Alleged Street Takeover

Early Saturday morning, hundreds of vehicles converged on the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, Florida, effectively blocking traffic in what authorities described as a street takeover.

The gathering began around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa, where traffic cameras recorded a large convoy of cars stopping the flow of traffic while several drivers performed burnouts on the interstate.

When Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrived, the crowd quickly dispersed, with drivers and spectators scrambling back to their vehicles. Most participants were allowed to leave without immediate charges.

One green BMW, however, accelerated away from the scene, prompting a trooper to initiate a high‑speed pursuit. The vehicle reached an estimated 140 mph—approximately twice the posted speed limit—before exiting the highway and stopping in a nearby parking lot.

The driver, identified as 25‑year‑old Yulian Lugo, was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participation in a street takeover, both classified as felony offenses.

Three passengers—a 24‑year‑old and two 18‑year‑olds—were also taken into custody and each faced a misdemeanor charge of highway racing.

All four individuals were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.

Street takeovers, in which participants use public roads for stunts such as burnouts while crowds gather, have drawn increased law‑enforcement attention due to the significant safety risks they pose to motorists, participants, and onlookers.

Investigators continue to review dash‑cam and traffic‑camera footage, and officials indicated that additional arrests may follow as the inquiry proceeds.
