A congressional candidate in Hawaii was involved in a violent confrontation at a beach, just days before appearing in court on felony charges. The incident, which was captured on video, shows the candidate, Kirill Basin, approaching a group of beachgoers and telling one man to put his bag away. The situation quickly escalated into a profanity-laced argument, with Basin challenging another man to fight and threatening a woman.
The confrontation briefly appeared to cool down when Basin shook another person's hand, but it quickly resumed when he turned toward another beachgoer and shouted an obscenity. Basin repeatedly asked what the other man was going to do, and the exchange escalated further. A woman called Basin "a child," prompting him to demand to know what she had said and threaten to harm her.
The situation took a violent turn when Basin walked back toward his belongings and was approached by a larger man, Kama Homan. Basin shoved Homan, and the two began scuffling, with Basin stumbling backward over two beach chairs and falling to the sand. After getting back to his feet, he grabbed one of the chairs and swung it at Homan, who shoved the chair aside and punched Basin, knocking him unconscious.
Homan, who claims to have mixed martial arts training, said he intervened after watching Basin become increasingly aggressive. He said Basin shoved him before he responded, and that he hit Basin with a left and a right punch, causing him to stumble and fall over the chairs. Homan also recovered a 5-inch switchblade that he said Basin had, and turned it over to the police.
Basin was charged with two felony counts of terroristic threatening and appeared in court, where a judge maintained his $1 million bail and ordered him to have no contact with Homan and four other people. If released, Basin must also stay away from the beach, refrain from possessing firearms or ammunition, avoid drugs and alcohol, submit to random drug testing, and undergo a mental health assessment with any recommended treatment.
Basin is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing, where the details of the case will be further examined. The incident has raised concerns about Basin's behavior and his suitability as a congressional candidate. The case is ongoing, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
