Dustin Lampros, a 32-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, has been working tirelessly to expose alleged child predators since 2022. He is known as "561 Predator Catcher" on social media, where he shares his quest to protect children from online dangers.
Lampros' mission began when a friend in cybersecurity alerted him to the issue of online child predators. The friend demonstrated how easy it was to create a fake profile for a 13-year-old girl and connect with men online. Lampros was stunned by the ease with which predators could target children.
He has since coordinated with people across the country who work as decoys posing as children. They converse online, exchange photos, and arrange in-person meetings. Lampros waits outside the meet-up location and places a 911 call to police when the predator arrives. He then films the interaction on Meta glasses.
Lampros credits his MMA training and faith for his ability to stay calm during these encounters. He has completed about 100 "catches" since 2022, with about 10 resulting in convictions. His technique has evolved over time, and he now coaxes alleged predators to discuss details on video that can be turned over to police.
Lampros trains at the MMA Science Academy in Sunrise, Florida, where his coaches and fellow fighters celebrate his successes. Despite being a smaller fighter, Lampros is a high-level professional athlete who can protect himself. He has received threats and has had to flee from situations that have spiralled out of control.
Lampros has been the target of criticism from some lawyers who accuse him of being a vigilante and claim that he is "just in it for the clicks." However, he remains committed to his mission and hopes to travel the country educating parents about how to protect children from online dangers when his MMA fighting career is over.
Lampros' journey began when he felt a calling to do something more with his life. He started praying and asking for God's will to be done in his life. It was then that he was introduced to the idea of catching child predators, and he felt a sense of purpose and direction.
Lampros still hopes to be selected as a fighter in the UFC, but he believes that a fight against evil is far more important. He knows that God is on his side, and whatever happens, he believes it's God's will.
Despite the risks and challenges, Lampros remains committed to his mission. He is determined to expose child predators and protect children from online dangers. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant and working together to keep our communities safe.
