Tucson Grandmother, Twice-Beaten Cancer Survivor, Fatally Attacked

Detectives initially identified a suspect, later confirmed to be Jefferson, during the early stages of the investigation. Members of the Tucson Police Department's community engagement squad located him on July 28 near Speedway Boulevard and Country Club Road and apprehended him.

A review of state records revealed that Jefferson had a prior conviction for aggravated assault, resulting in a five-year prison sentence in 2021. He was subsequently released from prison in October 2024. Additionally, Jefferson had a previous conviction for burglary.

The victim, Susan, was remembered by her family as a selfless individual who devoted her life to working tirelessly for her loved ones. Her family described her as a beacon of light, who had overcome cancer twice before her tragic death at the hands of the violent suspect.

The police department's Robbery Assault Unit and Homicide Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Susan's death. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives working diligently to gather evidence and bring closure to the victim's family.
