The case of Yashinder Kaur, a 29-year-old Indian pop star, has left her family and investigators searching for answers after her murder in India's Punjab state.
Kaur's five-year romance with Calgary contractor Sukhwinder Singh Brar seemed like a fairy tale, with the couple celebrating his 37th birthday in January with his kin in India.
However, a shocking discovery revealed that Brar was married with children in Canada, a revelation that led Kaur to question his intentions.
“She trusted him blindly, and she loved him dearly. He loved her, too,” Kaur's mother, Daljeet Kaur, said.
On May 13, Kaur vanished, and six days later, her car was pulled out of a canal near Ludhiana, where divers recovered her body.
She had been shot in the head and chest, and investigators believe the suspect fled via Nepal hours after the murder.
Three alleged accomplices, including the suspected killer's father, have been arrested for abduction and illegal use of firearms registered to Brar.
The victim's family is demanding Canada become involved in the case, citing the country's reputation as a safe haven for global criminals and extradition proceedings facing roadblocks.
Calgary cops and the RCMP told investigators they were currently uninvolved in the file, leaving the victim's family wondering why Canada won't act.
“We appeal to the Canadian government: We have all the necessary evidence and proof, he should be immediately deported from Canada,” the victim's cousin said.
Autorities in India have 90 days from the date of the murder to charge suspects, including the three already in jail, after which they would likely request Canada extradite the suspected killer.
Kaur's heartbroken mother said, “My child, come back to me. Nothing looks right to me, nothing feels good anymore. I remain completely devastated. My daughter wants justice.”
