The European Parliament recently hosted Cardinal Robert Sarah in a speech titled 'Europe and Africa. In conversation with Cardinal Robert Sarah.' The event aimed to reflect on the relationship between Europe and Africa, focusing on Christianity, culture, human dignity, and the future of societies.
During his address, Cardinal Sarah warned that radical Islam and the push of gender ideology pose a threat to the sanctity of life and God, describing them as 'apocalyptic beasts.' He emphasized that these ideologies are not only a threat to the family but also to humanity itself.
The Cardinal noted that the crisis of the Church in the West and the crisis of the West itself are interconnected. He stated that the Church's loss of its identity and prophetic voice has led to the West losing the meaning of its own civilization.
Cardinal Sarah also criticized the United Nations and European powers for imposing gender ideology on African nations in exchange for financial aid. He echoed his 2015 remarks at the Synod on the Family, where he described gender ideology and Islamic fundamentalism as 'apocalyptic beasts' that threaten humanity.
The Cardinal continued to express his concerns about the West's approach to human rights, stating that when 'rights' are constructed detached from the truth about the human person, reason becomes distorted and is used as a tool of power to impose one's will on others.
As a native of West Africa's Guinea, Cardinal Sarah has been an outspoken advocate for the West to hold on to its identity and principles. He has described mass migration as 'self-destruction' for Europe, arguing that it is better to help people flourish in their homelands rather than encouraging them to abandon their native countries.
