The Department of Homeland Security has requested that Florida officials transfer Akbor Miah into federal custody following his state murder prosecution. Miah, who entered the United States in 2016 and was deported in 2019, illegally reentered the country in 2022 and was released by federal authorities.
Authorities allege that Miah, using the alias Shahidul Islam, murdered his sister-in-law Monica Islam on May 2, 2025. She was found dead from a gunshot wound after disappearing from a convenience store where she worked.
Investigators recovered DNA evidence from Miah's vehicle and a bullet fragment from the passenger-side door, along with evidence of a shattered window. Prosecutors allege Miah fled to New York after the killing, where he was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited to Florida.
Miah now faces a first-degree murder charge, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. A grand jury indictment revealed that Miah conducted suspicious internet searches on the morning of the killing and rented a vehicle to travel to New York.
