Democratic Senate Candidates Call for Abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency

Democratic Senate Candidates Call for Abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency

The controversy surrounding the fatal shooting by federal immigration officers in Biddeford, Maine, has escalated the debate on immigration reform in the state. In the wake of the shooting, several candidates vying to replace former Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner have joined the chorus calling for the abolition of ICE.

Hours after the incident, four of the candidates joined hundreds of protesters who marched by the shooting site, demanding an end to the agency's operations. The shooting has become a pivotal issue in the Senate race, which may determine the majority in the upper chamber.

Nirav Shah, a former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized the need to abolish ICE, citing the agency's failure to effectively carry out its duties. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows also expressed her outrage, stating that the killing of a young man by ICE was unacceptable and must be stopped.

Troy Jackson, a former state Senate president, and Paige Loud, a social worker and former congressional candidate, also attended the protest and reiterated their calls for the dismantling of ICE. The incident is the second in a week in which ICE agents have used deadly force, following a fatal shooting in Houston, Texas.

The Maine attorney general's office, along with the FBI, is investigating the shooting. Initial statements suggest that the motorist who was the target of the enforcement operation was attempting to flee in the direction of an ICE agent. The incident has reignited protests and scrutiny of federal agents months after the shooting deaths in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Senate race in Maine has become increasingly heated, with seven Democrats vying for the nomination. Longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins has called for a full and impartial investigation into the shooting, while also stating that the Department of Homeland Security's Inspector General has taken over the investigation in cooperation with the FBI.

Protesters marched to Collins' Senate office in Biddeford, chanting "Vote her out." The incident is likely to further polarize the Senate race, with immigration reform emerging as a key issue in the high-stakes contest.
