FAA Investigates Delta Flight Struck by Fireworks During Chicago Landing

Delta Flight 1076 was struck by a fireworks mortar while descending into Chicago Midway Airport on July 4. The aircraft landed safely at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time, after the impact occurred shortly before touchdown.

The flight departed Hartsfield‑Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 7:51 p.m. Eastern Time and arrived at Midway at 8:33 p.m. Central Time.

An Airbus A319 carried 52 passengers and six crew members on the route from Atlanta to Chicago.

No injuries were reported and the crew did not declare an emergency during the landing sequence.

Post‑landing inspections found no structural damage to the aircraft, although minor paint damage was noted.

Investigations are underway to determine the launch location and identify those responsible for the fireworks mortar.

The airline will cooperate with authorities as the investigation continues.

The incident occurred during Fourth of July celebrations, raising concerns about fireworks usage near airport airspace.

After the landing, the aircraft taxied to the gate and the flight was completed as scheduled.
