Two GTA residents are facing charges following the seizure of over 1.5 kg of illicit drugs in connection with a drug-trafficking probe in Thunder Bay.

An Ontario Provincial Police probe in June was led by the Provincial Guns and Gangs Enforcement Team, including members from Thunder Bay Police and Nishnawbe Aski Police. The team conducted an intelligence-led investigation into suspected drug-trafficking activity in Thunder Bay.

The investigation suggested that illicit drugs were transported into Thunder Bay by bus from the GTA. On June 23, the team executed a search warrant at a motel in Thunder Bay, and a vehicle stop was conducted near Dryden by members of the OPP Community Street Crime Unit and the OPP Emergency Response Team.

Officers seized 1.1 kg of suspected crack cocaine, 500 grams of suspected cocaine, $770 in cash, and $300 US in cash. The estimated street value of the drugs seized was $282,000.

Dwight John, 29, of York, was charged with breach of probation and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine. Deshawn Yarde, 29, of Mississauga, was charged with possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with any information about illegal firearms or the possession, manufacturing, or trafficking of illicit drugs should contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

A male youth was charged with dangerous operation of an e-bike after a passenger was injured during an incident in May.

York Regional Police said officers were on patrol on May 29 near Wexford Dr. and Carrick Ave. in Georgina when they approached a motorist carrying two riders on an e-bike traveling at a high rate of speed.

Police said at least one of the riders was not wearing a helmet. Officers located the e-bike in the area of The Queensway S. and Morton Ave. with two riders onboard, who were observed proceeding through a red light and were nearly struck by a motor vehicle.

While being operated dangerously on the sidewalk, police said the e-bike went over a bump, causing the rear passenger to fall. The passenger, a female youth, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver fled from the scene on the e-bike.

Following a lengthy investigation, the driver was identified as a male youth from Georgina. On Friday, he was charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm, failure to stop after an accident, and flight from a peace officer.
