A $10 million drug bust occurred Monday at the Pharr Port of Entry when CBP officers inspected a commercial tractor trailer carrying cabbage. Canine inspection and nonintrusive imaging revealed a concealed load. Physical search uncovered 477 packages containing 1,173 pounds of cocaine, valued at roughly $10.8 million.
CBP seized both the narcotics and the commercial truck. The interception underscores the ongoing smuggling threat despite significant investments in border security and record staffing levels.
The Hidalgo Port of Entry director highlighted that CBP officers work around the clock, using every resource to detect and deter attempts to exploit borders.
Recent funding measures have injected $90 billion into CBP, with $64 billion from one bill and $26 billion from another. A large portion of the latter supports agency manpower.
Earlier this year, CBP set a staffing record with 21,471 officers, the highest in its 102‑year history. Border crossings have fallen sharply, dropping from over 144,000 encounters in December to 13,500 in May—a 90% reduction.
Despite these investments, federal agencies continue to intercept organized smuggling operations that threaten to bring drugs, weapons, and people into the country. In April, a vehicle carrying a rocket‑propelled grenade launcher, 16 AK rifles, 24 rifle magazines, 16 rifle stocks, 20 pistol grips, and other weapon parts was stopped at the border.
The threat of illicit narcotics remains constant, but so does the vigilance of CBP officers.
