Spain Becomes New California, Spanish Dominates: Bill Maher

Bill Maher returned to his television program after a summer break, opening the episode with observations that linked California to Spain.

He highlighted the challenges faced by California, including ongoing wildfire damage and increased migration, and pointed out that Spain is experiencing comparable issues.

In Spain, the northern region is battling severe wildfires, while the southern border near Ceuta has seen a surge of migrants.

Reports indicate that approximately 60,000 migrants from Morocco and other African nations have arrived at Ceuta since Thursday, with several deaths occurring during the mass movement.

The Spanish government declared the wildfires a national emergency, leading to the evacuation of about 200,000 residents from both Spain and nearby France.

California’s own wildfire history includes the devastating fires in the Palisades in January 2025, with many affected communities still awaiting reconstruction.

Maher concluded that the combination of wildfire devastation, migrant influx, and widespread Spanish language use makes Spain resemble California in his view.
