Micheal Ward, the actor best known for his role in the television series Top Boy, was acquitted of all five charges brought against him, including rape, assault by penetration and sexual assault.
The jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court deliberated for just over five hours before delivering a unanimous verdict of not guilty on Friday.
Ward stood quietly in the dock with his hand covering his mouth as the verdicts were announced, then broke into tears before leaning on his defense barrister as he left the courtroom. Family members and friends in the gallery shared the emotional moment.
Outside the courthouse, Ward stood beside his solicitor while a statement was read on his behalf, marking the conclusion of the case.
The solicitor noted that the investigation had spanned three and a half years, during which Ward’s life and career had been put on hold and that he is grateful for the support that has helped him move forward.
Ward also expressed gratitude to those who have experienced sexual violence, emphasizing that they deserve to be heard and treated with compassion.
The prosecution alleged that Ward had sexually assaulted a woman after meeting her at an all‑white New Year’s party in Gants Hill, East London, and that the encounter took place in the back of a Mercedes.
In his own defense, Ward maintained that the interaction was consensual, describing a flirtatious evening that culminated in a mutual attraction and a “great time” for both parties.
Defense counsel challenged the reliability of the complainant’s testimony, pointing out inconsistencies and the delayed appearance of deleted messages that were not disclosed until months after the initial police interview.
Character witnesses, including a co‑star from Top Boy, spoke of Ward as polite, hardworking, and driven to build a good life for his daughter, underscoring a personality at odds with the allegations.
Ward grew up in East London after the loss of his father at a young age, rose to prominence with Top Boy, earned a BAFTA Rising Star award in 2020, and has since appeared in films such as Empire of Light and Eddington.
Following the Friday verdicts, Ward was formally acquitted of all charges, allowing him to look forward to rebuilding his career and personal life.
