According to recent data, 71% of drivers reported being satisfied with their journey across all English motorways and A roads, up from 69% last year. Satisfaction with journey times, road surfaces, and roadworks management also saw improvements.
However, experts warn that the upcoming maintenance program could have a negative impact on road user satisfaction. Steve Gooding, a prominent voice on road safety, highlighted the importance of effective roadworks management in maintaining driver satisfaction.
Gooding noted that the scale of maintenance work planned for the network through 2030 requires National Highways to consistently improve its management of roadworks to avoid disrupting drivers.
A recent survey ranked England's motorways and A roads, with the A30 and M20 topping the list at 79% satisfaction. The M56 and M5 followed closely behind at 78%, while the M4 and A14 trailed slightly behind at 76%.
However, there are also positive signs that improvements to the road user experience are possible. Transport Focus director Louise Collins noted that overall satisfaction has increased, and drivers are noticing improvements in key areas such as road surfaces and incident response times.
Collins emphasized the importance of effective communication and planning in minimizing disruption and ensuring that roadworks are well-executed. National Highways is committed to tackling an ageing network head-on to keep the country moving and give drivers better experiences.
