Daniel Quizon Wins Bangkok Summer Standard Open

After a period without titles, Filipino Grandmaster Daniel Quizon captured the Standard Open championship at the 2nd Bangkok Summer International Chess Open.

He finished the event unbeaten, scoring 7.5 points from six victories and three draws, including a win over Russian Grandmaster Timur Gareyev and a draw against International Master Michael Concio.

The victory marked Quizon’s first title since 2022, when he secured his grandmaster norms at the Hanoi Grandmaster Chess Tournament and later represented the Philippines at the World Chess Olympiad.

The tournament featured a strong international field; Gareyev finished second, while IMs Michael Concio and Iljya Grigorjev tied for third and fourth with seven points each.

Four other Filipino players placed in the top ten: FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri fifth, Darry Bernardo sixth, Jan Clifford Labog eighth, and Jerish John Velarde ninth.

Additional Filipino competitors also excelled, with John Paul De Guzman winning the Challenger section and Jerish John Velarde taking the super rapid title.
