Teenager Tragically Drowns on Duke of Edinburgh Trip, Community Mourns His Kindness

Umar Dumbuya, an 18‑year‑old from east London, drowned in the River Wye while on a Duke of Edinburgh camping trip to Powys on June 30.

Rescue volunteers, firefighters and the National Police Air Service joined a search after the teenager entered the water near Glasbury Bridge. His body was recovered shortly thereafter, ending the operation.

Friends and classmates were seen at the Glasbury Scout Hut, offering support while authorities continued the search effort.

The teenager’s younger sister posted a tribute, describing him as a bright, smiling brother and expressing her deep grief.

A friend recalled Umar as kind and motivating, noting that their last conversation before the accident had focused on future plans.

Classmates left touching remarks on a memorial page set up by the college, recalling his positive energy and teamwork during the Duke of Edinburgh expedition.

The 18-year-old was on the outing as part of the national programme which encourages personal development in young people. But the alarm was raised after he "entered the water and could not be located" in the River Wye at Glasbury, Powys. Emergency services rushed to the scene at 6.30pm on Tuesday while the teen's friends were supported by police at nearby Glasbury Scout Hut. Dyfed-Powys Police said mountain rescue volunteers, firefighters and National Police Air Service were involved in the search. A DofE spokeswoman said: "Our thoughts are with the young person's family, together with all those who were taking part. "We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time." The DofE said it was "liaising closely with the young person's college and relevant authorities to understand how this tragic incident happened". Investigators were seen photographing a shingle beach, known as The Bont, and the river below Glasbury Bridge. The beach is a popular spot for families, with shallow waters for paddling and deeper pools for swimming below the bridge. The DofE Awards features three levels of bronze, silver and gold. Expeditions can last between two days for bronze level and up to four days for gold level. WALES NEWS SERVICE

A drama teacher remembered him as a promising poet and actor, praising his enthusiasm and talent in the classroom.

The college released a statement expressing profound sadness over the loss, highlighting Umar’s kindness and the void left in the community.

Funds are being raised to help cover funeral expenses and other costs, allowing the family to grieve without additional financial burden.

Authorities said the incident occurred when a male entered the water and could not be located at Glasbury, Powys, on Tuesday evening.
