Journalist Nick Shirley Attacked, Chased in Violent Incident

On August 3, 2026, an independent journalist was violently attacked while covering the surge of migrants entering Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Africa.

The reporter was chased by a man armed with a knife and pelted with rocks. He was forced to seek protection from Spanish police after the assault escalated.

In the footage, the journalist can be heard shouting that he was being chased, that the assailant was throwing rocks, and that the attacker was demanding the camera be cut.

After the incident, he posted a brief statement describing the chase and the need for police escort, and he and his team were eventually escorted to safety.

The attack occurred amid a broader crisis, as more than 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, overwhelming the city’s population of roughly 84,000.

The sudden influx prompted closures of businesses, deployment of military forces, and several deaths during chaotic crossings.

Many of the migrants remain in the surrounding mountains and city, continuing to attempt entry into mainland Europe.

The incident highlights the challenges of border control and the impact on local communities in a region experiencing rapid demographic change.
