Irish Authorities Criticized for Withholding Identity of Asylum Seeker Sought in Connection with US Mother's Murder Investigation

Irish Authorities Criticized for Withholding Identity of Asylum Seeker Sought in Connection with US Mother's Murder Investigation

An international manhunt is underway for the fifth day following the murder of a 43-year-old American woman in Ireland. The victim, Jamey Carney, a New York native who moved to Ireland in 2021, was found dead in her home in Killarney, County Kerry, with head injuries and signs of suffocation.

The picturesque town of Killarney is a popular tourist destination, and authorities have yet to name a suspect or provide a description of the man they are seeking. Irish police did describe a "person of interest" who had traveled from Killarney to Dublin Airport and boarded a flight to Turkey before Carney's body was discovered.

Some reports suggest the person of interest is an asylum seeker originally from Jordan who arrived in Ireland in 2024. However, Irish police have not publicly disclosed his identity or any identifying features, sparking criticism from a former FBI agent and an Irish politician.

The former FBI agent questioned why Irish authorities would not release the suspect's name, photo, or description, stating that "time is of the essence" and withholding this information could hinder the investigation. The agent emphasized that public help is often crucial in locating fugitives.

An Irish politician also criticized the decision not to publicly identify the person of interest, citing public safety concerns. The politician argued that if a person commits a heinous crime, their identity should be made public.

Irish police are treating Carney's death as a murder and are working with Interpol, Europol, and Turkish authorities to locate the suspect. Detectives fear that the suspect may have already left Turkey and traveled to Syria or his native Jordan.

The search for the suspect is becoming increasingly difficult as the hours and days pass. Carney's body was discovered by her 13-year-old daughter, and Irish police issued alerts to airports, ports, and transportation hubs shortly after.

Carney's background reveals a life dedicated to fighting for others' rights. Her social media profiles described her as a "New Yorker in Ireland" and featured photos and videos of her with her daughter and partner.

The killing has brought attention to Ireland's rising violence against women, with eight women dying in violent circumstances in the country this year. Authorities are still investigating the case, and Carney's family remembers her as an "insanely caring human being."
