Philippines launches interoperable direct debit and Instapay

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the central bank of the Philippines, has launched two innovative digital payment services: InstaPay for Business and InstaPay for Individuals. The services aim to improve the adoption of digital payments and increase transaction volumes in the country.

The InstaPay for Business service allows businesses to conduct real-time money remittances, enabling them to receive funds from their clients in real-time, 24/7. This feature enables businesses to benefit from rapid transactions, eliminating the need for manual bank-to-bank transactions.

The BSP, along with its partners, has rolled out the InstaPay for Individuals service, which allows consumers to initiate fund transactions from their bank accounts to their friends, family members, or anyone else, in a real-time manner. The system can bring transactions to a faster pace, improving the digital payments experience for customers. The launch of InstaPay for Individuals introduces a new feature that does not require their bank accounts to be linked to the sender’s bank account.

The central bank hopes to boost digital payments in the country, contributing to the Philippine Development Plan's goal for digital payments to compose 60-70% of the total volume of retail payments by 2028. Direct Debit PH, a standardized recurring payment facility under the National Retail Payment System (NRPS), has been launched.
