Mitsui Leads Coconut Nanotech Trials for Food Sustainability

Mitsui Leads Coconut Nanotech Trials for Food Sustainability

The Philippine Coconut Authority announced a memorandum of agreement with Mitsui & Co. (Asia Pacific) Pte. Ltd. to evaluate the use of nanotechnology in coconut cultivation.

The collaboration will conduct two years of field trials aimed at determining whether nanotechnology can boost coconut yields and enhance tree health.

The trial will inject coconut trees with capsules that contain nutrients and crop protection agents, a method designed to improve absorption efficiency while using smaller quantities of nutrient solution.

Mitsui will provide its proprietary nano‑formulated nutrient technology, while the Philippine Coconut Authority will identify trial sites and deliver technical support.

PCA administrator and chief executive officer Dexter R. Buted said the partnership could transform coconut farming by improving productivity, strengthening tree health, and increasing farm resilience.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. noted that a healthier and more productive coconut industry would raise rural incomes and export earnings, supporting a modern and sustainable agricultural sector.
