Thousands of Illegal African Migrants Land on Spanish Coast

Thousands of Illegal African Migrants Land on Spanish Coast

Hundreds of migrants gathered along the fortified fence separating Morocco from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in a coordinated attempt to breach the border early Wednesday.

Security forces responded with crowd-control measures, deploying water cannons and tear‑gas canisters to disperse the crowd and prevent unauthorized entry.

Several individuals sustained injuries during the confrontation, and authorities reported the detention of dozens of participants for further processing.

Ceuta, one of two Spanish territories on the African continent, has long been a focal point for irregular migration due to its status as a gateway to the European Union.

The latest incident follows a pattern of heightened migration pressure, driven by economic hardship and instability across the Sahel and Horn of Africa.

Spanish officials emphasized that the enclave’s border infrastructure, including a high fence and surveillance systems, remains operational and will continue to deter illegal crossings.

Moroccan authorities reiterated their cooperation with Spain, noting that joint patrols and intelligence sharing aim to manage migration flows while respecting humanitarian considerations.

Humanitarian organizations called for increased assistance to vulnerable migrants and urged both governments to address the root causes prompting such dangerous attempts.
