Maine Democrat Valli Geiger Emerges as Potential Senate Candidate Amid Platner's Endorsement.

Maine Democrat Valli Geiger Emerges as Potential Senate Candidate Amid Platner's Endorsement.

Maine state Rep. Valli Geiger, a Democrat from Rockland, has gained national attention after revealing that embattled Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner called her to consider taking his place on the ballot if he withdraws. Geiger, a former nurse and mayor, has not been named the replacement nominee, and Platner has not formally dropped out of the Maine Senate race.

According to Geiger, Platner praised her as a "fighter" and asked if he could put her name forward as a potential replacement. Platner's campaign has stated that no endorsement decision has been made, but encouraged Geiger to consider running if he stepped aside. This development has added Geiger's name to the mix of potential candidates who could replace Platner on the ballot.

Geiger has publicly stated that she would not "throw Graham under the bus" and also expressed support for Jenny Racicot, the woman who accused Platner of rape. In a Facebook post, Geiger described Racicot's story as "credible," but acknowledged that the truth may never be fully known. Geiger also praised Platner's "passion for economic populism" and described him as "a man becoming a better man."

As a third-term Democratic state representative, Geiger represents a coastal House district in Maine that includes Rockland and several surrounding areas. Her background includes serving on the Rockland City Council, working as a nurse at Pen Bay Medical Center, and holding a master's degree in sustainable design.

Geiger is not the only Democrat whose name has surfaced as a potential replacement for Platner. Several other Democrats, including former gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and former Maine CDC Director Nirav Shah, have expressed interest or are considering bids.

Under Maine law, if Platner formally withdraws as the Democratic nominee by July 13, the Maine Democratic Party can select a new nominee through its party process. The replacement nominee would need to be chosen by July 27 to appear on the general election ballot.
