Platner withdraws from key Senate race after serious rape allegation.

Platner withdraws from key Senate race after serious rape allegation.

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, announced the suspension of his campaign amid a series of serious allegations and mounting pressure from party leaders.

In a video posted to social media, Platner stated that the movement could not continue with him as the candidate and therefore he was halting campaign operations.

The decision comes just five days before the state‑mandated deadline for withdrawing, a deadline that, if missed, would have barred Democrats from naming a replacement on the November ballot.

Platner had secured a decisive victory in the June Democratic primary, but two days earlier a woman publicly alleged that he had forced her to have sex while he was heavily intoxicated.

He categorically denied the accusation, calling the claims false and asserting that no non‑consensual activity ever occurred.

The accuser described an incident in which Platner entered her home uninvited, became physically forceful, and ignored repeated pleas to stop, resulting in non‑consensual intercourse.

She explained that her decision to come forward was delayed by a personal conflict between supporting his political platform and rejecting his behavior.

The campaign responded that the allegations are untrue and emphasized the seriousness of the accusations, while indicating a period of reflection on the best path forward.

Additional claims emerged, alleging that Platner removed condoms during sexual activity and engaged in physical aggression toward a former partner; the campaign labeled these accusations as false and politically motivated.

Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer, had previously drawn national attention and support from progressive leaders, but his candidacy was also shadowed by past controversies, including offensive online comments and a tattoo that resembled a prohibited symbol.

He acknowledged a history of post‑traumatic stress disorder from his military service and apologized for earlier remarks that had sparked criticism.

Senior Democratic officials and prominent supporters publicly urged Platner to withdraw, and several high‑profile endorsements were rescinded.

National Democratic fundraising committees redirected resources away from the Maine race in light of the allegations.

The incumbent Republican senator, Susan Collins, condemned the allegations as appalling but affirmed that the decision on the Democratic nominee rests with the party.

Because Platner withdrew before the deadline, the Maine Democratic Party will convene to select a new nominee by the July 27 deadline, ensuring a candidate appears on the general‑election ballot.

The seat is considered pivotal for control of the Senate, with Collins seeking a sixth term and Democrats aiming to flip the chamber.
