In an exciting development for the Philippines' agricultural sector, the Department of Agriculture (DA) proudly announced the inauguration of the country's first seaweed bioreactor. Located at the National Seaweed Technology Development Center in Sorsogon, this cutting-edge facility is expected to revolutionize the production of disease-free seaweed propagules for farmers.
The establishment of the seaweed bioreactor marks a significant leap forward for the Philippines, which is currently the fourth-largest global producer of seaweed. Previously, farmers relied on informal methods to grow seaweed, which often resulted in subpar results. Now, with this new automated bioreactor, the quality of seaweed propagules can be produced much faster, as stated by Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr.
The bioreactor will not only benefit the seaweed industry but also contribute to the Philippines' race for a leadership position in seaweed production, particularly the sought-after Kappaphycus variety, used for various applications like food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
The Department of Agriculture is currently evaluating potential sites in Palawan and Mindanao for additional bioreactor installations.
